The museum depicts and traces the history of the railroad in Pennsylvania. Provided by the museum is a variety of interactive exhibits, which are intended to aid in understanding the history. Historic films are also presented and they recall life in the area.

Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art offers traveling and permanent exhibitions, as well as educational programs. The American Association of Museums gave the museum accreditation in 1995 and today it is found in four communities: Loretto, Altoona, Ligonier and Johnstown. Inside the museum is a large selection of 19th and 20th century items, such as paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints., including some work of Andy Warhol.
